Taycheedah Institution Overview
Taycheedah Correctional Institution is operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, not by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office. The DOC facility page describes it as a maximum- and medium-security institution entrusted with custody and supervision of adult female offenders. It also serves as the intake, assessment, and evaluation facility for all female inmates sentenced to adult custody in Wisconsin.
The prison is physically in Fond du Lac County, but its records are state prison records. A person arrested in Fond du Lac County may begin in the county jail while pre-trial. After conviction and a DOC sentence, the person moves into the state corrections system. For adult female sentences, Taycheedah can be the point where intake, assessment, classification, and prison placement begin.
The official DOC facility page appears in the screenshot below.
The screenshot is useful because it confirms the state operator, facility address, warden listing, visiting links, and DOC framing for the institution.
Taycheedah Institution Population
The FY25 Taycheedah fact sheet reported 985 persons in DOC care as of June 30, 2025. The Wisconsin DOC May 2026 DAI At-a-Glance report listed Taycheedah Correctional Institution at 1,037 people and the statewide adult institution population at 23,492. These are state prison population figures, not county jail roster counts.
The FY25 fact sheet reported an average age of 38, with the youngest person at 18 and the oldest at 82. It listed 62% White, 26% Black, 12% American Indian or Alaskan Native, and 1% Asian or Pacific Islander, with 11% Hispanic origin. It also reported 95% with a mental-health diagnosis, 64% in a first Wisconsin incarceration, and 5% with an active sex offense.
Taycheedah DOC Inmate Locator
Use the Wisconsin DOC Offender Locator to search for a person sentenced to DOC incarceration, supervision, or both. DOC states that the locator does not provide county jail inmates, adjudicated juvenile offenders, or persons of interest to DOJ. That distinction is central in Fond du Lac County because the county jail roster and the DOC locator cover different custody stages.
- Open the Wisconsin DOC Offender Locator and review the public notice.
- Acknowledge the locator terms before moving into the searchable database.
- Search by name or DOC number when the search form is available.
- Confirm the person's listed facility, status, and sentence-related information.
- If the person is not found, check the county jail roster or Wisconsin VINE for a different custody status.
| Lookup system | Covers | Does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| Fond du Lac County roster | Current adult county jail detainees | DOC prison inmates after transfer |
| Wisconsin DOC locator | Convicted offenders sentenced to DOC incarceration or supervision | County jail inmates and juveniles |
| Wisconsin VINE | Custody and case notification registration | Full prison file or complete court record |
Taycheedah Institution Contact
The DOC facility page lists Taycheedah's street address, main phone, fax, and warden. The April 2026 visiting memo names Michael Gierach as warden, consistent with the research direction for current facility content. Facility questions should go to DOC channels, while county jail questions should remain with the Fond du Lac County Jail.

Taycheedah Institution Visits
Taycheedah visits follow DOC approval and scheduling rules. The April 24, 2026 TCI visiting memo says visitors must have an approved Visitor Questionnaire, DOC-21AA, on file and must be on the visiting list. The person in custody must provide the visitor's unique Party ID from the visitor list. Contact visits are scheduled through ICSolutions.
| Step | Rule | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | Visitor Questionnaire required | Visitor must be approved and on the visiting list. |
| Party ID | Provided by the person in custody | TCI staff cannot resolve Party ID concerns. |
| Scheduling | ICSolutions | Contact visits display as 15-minute visits for scheduling purposes only. |
| Advance window | Two to fourteen days | Schedule at least two days ahead and no more than fourteen days in the future. |
| Group size | Up to six adults and children | At least one adult must be present. |
DOC visiting requirements differ from county jail visiting. JailATM county-jail registration is not the Taycheedah scheduling system. Visitors with Party ID concerns are directed in the memo to DOCDAIElectronicVisitSupport@wisconsin.gov.
Taycheedah Mail and Money
Taycheedah mail, money, property, and package rules are DOC rules. The DOC general information pages identify statewide money, mail, property, tablet, and package systems separate from county jail rules. The research notes DOC's ICS tablet transition and identifies Union Supply and Jack L. Marcus as property or package vendors. Families should use DOC instructions rather than the Fond du Lac County Jail's scanned-mail address or Stellar Teller kiosk.
| Service | State prison route |
|---|---|
| Mail and property rules | Wisconsin DOC money, mail, and property instructions |
| Contact visit scheduling | ICSolutions under TCI visiting memo rules |
| Packages or property vendors | DOC identifies Union Supply and Jack L. Marcus in general property information |
| County jail deposits | Not the Taycheedah state prison deposit route |
Taycheedah Intake and Classification
Taycheedah has a special role in Wisconsin because it serves as the intake, assessment, and evaluation facility for female inmates sentenced to adult custody. That means a person can arrive after sentencing for classification even if the final long-term placement may later be reviewed within the Wisconsin Women's Correctional System. Intake and classification are different from street-arrest booking at the county jail.
The Wisconsin Women's Correctional System joined Taycheedah, Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center, and Milwaukee Women's Correctional Center under the TCI warden on August 21, 2005. That system-level role is why a Fond du Lac County arrest that leads to a DOC sentence may eventually appear in DOC tools even if the arrest began on the sheriff's adult jail roster.
Taycheedah Programs and Records
The FY25 fact sheet lists a broad set of programs: Camp Reunite and extended parent-child visits, parenting, DBT, coping skills, emotion regulation, substance-use disorder treatment, recreation, healthy relationships, trauma treatment, restrictive housing programming, religious services, reentry work, certified peer specialist activity, Moving On, Beyond Violence, GED or HSED, post-secondary or Pell options, building maintenance and construction, welding, office software application, cosmetology, and horticulture.
For public access, the DOC locator is a custody and status tool. It is not a full case file, not a county jail booking page, and not a substitute for WCCA court records. A person looking for arrest-to-case information may need the county jail roster, the DOC locator, WCCA, and Wisconsin VINE, depending on where the person is in the custody path.
About Taycheedah Institution
Taycheedah's correctional history is unusually long. The grounds include Governor James Doty's early home. Women were first housed at the Wisconsin State Prison, now Waupun Correctional Institution, before a women's facility was developed at Taycheedah. The Wisconsin Industrial Home for Women opened in 1921, the Wisconsin Prison for Women opened in 1933, the two facilities consolidated in 1945, and the legislature renamed the facility Taycheedah Correctional Institution in 1975.
Because Taycheedah is state-run, it should be read alongside the Fond du Lac County custody pages without blending them. The Fond du Lac County jail inmate records page covers adult county detainees. The Fond du Lac County inmate population page distinguishes county jail, juvenile secure detention, and state prison custody.
Note: Confirm DOC locator status and visiting approval before planning a Taycheedah visit.
